About Irish Lotto
The Irish Lotto is Ireland’s favourite lottery with a starting jackpot of €2 million. It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday night and offers fantastic winning odds of 1 in 29 for any prize. Players pick 6 numbers which are then drawn from a total of 47 numbers but there is also a 7th number drawn which acts as the Bonus Ball – this increases the number of winners per draw as players can match 2, 3, 4, 5 numbers plus Bonus Ball and win!
History of Irish Lotto
This flagship Irish National Lottery was established in April 1988 in order to raise vital funds for charitable causes such as sports and recreation, health and welfare, and the Arts. This was run by the Government up until 2014 when it was then sold to a private operating company with investors who are also responsible for running the UK National Lottery.
Initially, there was only the Saturday draw taking place and then in 1990, they introduced the Wednesday draw. A minimum jackpot of IR£250,000 was set but after Ireland adopted the Euro in January 2002 the jackpot was moved to Euros and became €1.2 million. It was then in 2006 that this minimum jackpot increased to €2 million.
How to Play Irish Lotto
Players must pick six Irish Lottery numbers between 1 and 47, but at LottoPlus, the numbers are randomly picked for you already. Six numbers are then picked from 47 and an additional number from 41 numbers which then acts as the bonus ball.
There are 8 prize tiers with a minimum starting jackpot of €2 million and no jackpot cap, so the top prize will continue to roll until one person matches all 6 numbers. Prizes are also awarded for matching 2 numbers and the bonus ball.
Largest Jackpot Records
The largest jackpot won so far was in 2008, at €18.9 million, which was split between 16 colleagues at a concrete plant in County Carlow quarry.
Playing in syndicates are very popular for this lottery and there have been plenty of people winning prizes ranging from €50,000 to a whopping €18 million! Join the Irish Lotto Syndicate and get your chance of winning those prizes.
Charities Irish Lotto Supports
The Irish Lotto funds project all over the country ranging from Youth activities to Arts and Culture ventures and has donated over €4.5 billion for good causes since its launch. Some of these projects include Baton Twirling Sports Association of Ireland and the St. Johns Ambulance in Drogheda. So when you buy an Irish Lotto ticket, you are supporting some very good causes in the Republic of Ireland.
Alongside the main lotto game, there are two additional games – Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 – players can pay a little more on top of their lotto ticket to win additional prizes with the guaranteed weekly jackpots at €500,000 and €250,000.
If that’s not enough, players have an extra opportunity to win with the Lotto Plus Raffle which was introduced in September 2015 and is part of the Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 games. On your Lotto Plus ticket, there will be a 4-digit code and if you match the winning code drawn on the night, then you will win €300. You will have to purchase a Lotto Plus ticket in order to get the Lotto Plus Raffle.
